National Narwhal Appreciation Day: Celebrating the "Unicorn of the Sea"
National Narwhal Appreciation Day is celebrated each year on April 22nd.
Known as “The Unicorn of the Sea”, the narwhal is a medium-sized toothed whale that possesses a large "tusk" which is actually a protruding canine tooth. It lives year-round in the Arctic waters around Greenland, Canada and Russia and is one of two living species of whale in the family Monodontidae, along with the beluga whale.
Narwhals have more recently become a symbol of pop culture playing roles in the acclaimed holiday film, Elf and as one of the main characters in the children’s book series, Narwhal & Jelly.
