A Premium Painting Surface

Our primed linen canvases have a layer of Zinc White and Titanium White bound in linseed oil. Zinc White offers a transparent, soft and easy-flowing paint. Titanium White is more opaque and has a high tinting strength. The two colors balance well to create the ideal painting surface. Linseed oil allows the underpainting to dry thoroughly and provides long-term stability. The oil penetrates the linen to protect it from the elements. 

The paints and oil combine to control absorbency, producing more vibrant colors and effective blending. The priming results in a smooth or slightly textured surface for fine detail work with some tooth for paint adherence. Artists prefer these panels for detailed brushwork and layering. 

The Design Behind Our Linen Panels for Oil Painting

We thoughtfully consider every detail in the creation of our oil-primed panels. The panels use fine-weave Claessens Linen #13, which offers a smooth, portrait-grade painting surface. Beva Film adheres the linen to the substrate, creating added stability and longevity. The panels are thin and lightweight, making them easy to transport. They also resist warping. Our art panels are made in the USA. 

We use three substrate materials:

  • Hardboard: This compacted 1/8-inch board offers a smooth surface for the linen and is dense and stable, resisting warping and damage. 
  • Baltic birch: Our 1/4-inch Baltic birch panels provide a uniform grain pattern for a smooth surface. The material can withstand heavy paint applications and resist damage.
  • Aluminum composite: Create a modern look and smooth texture with our 1/8-inch aluminum composite panels. The material is very lightweight and easy to move.

Our panels come in eight sizes, from 4x6 inches to 12x16 inches. For a unique size, you can purchase custom-cut linen with an oil-primed finish. This option works well for artists who have an existing board or stretcher bars in particular dimensions.
