Gamblin 3-in-1 Medium is a versatile oil painting medium designed for panel preparation, underpainting, and oiling out. At Trekell, we especially recommend it as an effective way to prepare raw Baltic birch panels before applying oil ground or beginning an oil painting.

When applied to unfinished wood, 3-in-1 helps reduce moisture absorption, which can help minimize warping over time. Its low-viscosity formula penetrates the surface of the wood, creating an ideal foundation for oil painting while preserving the natural character of the panel. Gamblin specifically recommends 3-in-1 for preparing wood panels prior to applying Oil Ground because of the strong bond it creates between the panel and subsequent oil painting layers.

Beyond panel preparation, 3-in-1 can be mixed with oil colors to improve flow, create transparent washes, and speed drying in underpainting layers. It can also be used for oiling out dry paintings to restore color depth and even out surface sheen.

Features:

  • Ideal for sealing and preparing raw wood panels for oil painting
  • Helps reduce moisture absorption and minimize warping
  • Creates an excellent foundation for Gamblin Oil Ground
  • Thin, penetrating formula absorbs easily into wood surfaces
  • Improves paint flow and transparency in underpainting
  • Useful for oiling out dry paintings before varnishing
  • Dries to a subtle satin finish
  • Made with USA-grown soybean and safflower oils

Recommended Use for Raw Panels:
Apply a liberal coat to the panel surface and allow it to soak in for 2–3 minutes. Wipe away any excess with a lint-free cloth and allow the panel to dry overnight before applying Oil Ground or beginning your painting. For thin panels, consider coating the reverse side as well to further reduce moisture absorption.
