Trekell Oil Ground Panel – 1/8" Hardboard – 8" x 10"

Trekell Oil Ground Panel provides oil painters with a thin, rigid, and lightweight hardboard painting surface prepared with Gamblin Oil Ground. The lightly textured ground provides controlled tooth while maintaining a less absorbent surface that allows oil colors to retain their richness and saturation.

This 8" x 10" panel is made from 1/8" hardboard, giving artists a compact and lightweight rigid support that's easy to transport and store. Its size and thin profile make it especially convenient for plein air painting, studies, travel, workshops, and smaller finished works.

Why Artists Choose Trekell Oil Ground Panels

  • 8" x 10" painting panel
  • Lightweight 1/8" hardboard substrate
  • Prepared with Gamblin Oil Ground
  • Lightly textured surface with controlled tooth
  • Less absorbent than many traditional acrylic-gesso surfaces
  • Helps oil colors retain their richness and saturation
  • Rigid painting surface without the flex of stretched canvas
  • Thin profile is convenient for plein air painting, travel, and studies
  • Ready for oil painting
  • Proudly made in the USA

Important Information About Our Panel Preparation

Trekell believes artists should know how the surfaces they paint on are prepared. Recommendations for artist materials can change as manufacturers continue to research and test how different materials interact over time, and we update our processes as new information becomes available.

Previous Preparation: Trekell's Oil Ground Panels were historically prepared by applying Golden GAC 100 to the hardboard before applying Gamblin Oil Ground. This process reflected the panel preparation practices and product information available to us at the time.

Updated Preparation: Golden Artist Colors has since revised its recommendations regarding the use of glossy acrylic products, including GAC 100, beneath oil painting layers. In response to this updated guidance, Trekell has updated our preparation process. Gamblin Oil Ground is now applied directly to the hardboard on the painting side of the panel without GAC 100 underneath it. Golden GAC 100 is currently applied to the reverse of the panel as part of our panel preparation process and is not part of the painting surface.

Because inventory produced under both preparation methods may be in circulation during this transition, customers who need to know which preparation method was used for a particular panel are welcome to contact Trekell before painting.

A Note About Artist Materials and Panel Preparation

Recommendations for preparing painting supports can evolve as manufacturers conduct additional testing and learn more about the long-term interaction of artist materials. Artists concerned with specific conservation, archival, or technical requirements should review the current recommendations provided by the manufacturers of the grounds, paints, mediums, and other materials they use.

No prepared painting surface can account for every combination of materials, technique, storage environment, or intended use. Artists who require complete control over every layer of their painting support may prefer to purchase one of Trekell's unprimed panels and prepare the surface using the materials and methods appropriate for their individual practice.

About Oil Ground Color

Oil ground can naturally darken or yellow when stored away from light. If your panel appears darker or more yellow than expected, place it in an area with natural light. Exposure to light will help reverse the darkening and return the ground to a lighter appearance. This natural color change does not indicate a problem with the painting surface.

For hanging or display, this flat panel should be framed or mounted to a cradle.
