Golden Artist Colors

Golden Artist Colors, Inc. got its start way back in the 1930s as Bocour’s, when Sam Golden partnered with his uncle Leonard Bocour to make hand-ground oil paints for artists in Manhattan.

Legendary names like Pollock, Rothko, Frankenthaler, Newman, Kooning, and Levine frequently visited the 15th street shop.

Later, between 1946 and 1949, after an artist brought in a honey resin sample and asked if it could be made into paint, Sam began experimenting with formulas to make acrylic paint.

Get ready for your mind to be blown: Bocour and Golden invented a mineral-spirit-based acrylic paint under the name Magna, and with continued development, Golden morphed the paint into water-borne Aquatec, a recognized name alongside the similar inventions of Guitterez (politec) and Levinson (Liquitex).

Acrylic paint as we know it today stemmed from these formulations from the last mid-century.

Sam Golden retired, but in 1980 he and his family decided to open a new company, Golden Artist Colors, Inc.

Their goal was to make good products for artists and be environmentally conscious while doing so.

At this time, Sam had grown bored in retirement and would often find himself in the 900 square foot barn at their home in New Berlin, NY. By 1985, the company had grown enough to constitute the addition of a 6,200 square foot factory to the cow barn.

This allowed for the expansion of their product line to include Fluid, Matte, and Interface acrylics in addition to their Heavy Body and Iridescent Acrylics. By 1997, Golden’s 10th anniversary, they took down the old barn and added another
31,000 square feet to the factory space.

Sadly, Sam passed away that year but his legacy continued as the family and employees kept making paints and mediums using sustainable production processes in the larger facility.

Golden became majority employee-owned by 2012. Even as the company was now distributing worldwide, Golden continues to make its product on the original grounds of that old barn In New Berlin.

Trekell carries a great lineup of Golden paints and mediums. Golden Heavy Body Paints are known for smooth and buttery consistency, and the Golden Fluid Acrylic Paints are extremely versatile, allowing artists myriad application techniques.

If your paint of choice is acrylic, you’ll be amazed at Golden paint’s application and the ability to use less of it to achieve the look you desire making it kind on your wallet and good to your soul.
